Use Teleseminars to Grow Your Business!

If you have worked for a large corporation in the past three or four years, you've experienced the explosion in conference calls.  Companies jumped on relatively cheap conference calls as a way of getting employees together without paying to ship them around the country.  Great - what a way to save time and money, especially after air travel became such a pain, travel expenses skyrocketed, and budgets were cut to the bone.

--------------------------

It didn't exactly work out that way.  What actually happened was a proliferation of time-wasting corporate conference calls for every possible reason (and often no good reason).  With corporations paying several cents a minute per participant, the costs can really add up.

As a small business, how can all this possibly apply to you?  You don't need to gather far-flung employees together for brain-numbing conference calls.  You need to bring customers and prospects together for an audio seminar.  You want to convince prospects to buy your products or services, and customers to buy more of your products or services.

Market your call as you would any promotion or event, such as newspapers, e-mail and direct mail.  Require pre-registration so that you'll know how many attendees to expect.  E-mail the conference call-in information to those to register, and send a reminder e-mail a week ahead of time, and the day before.  You might want to consider giving them a chance to send e-mail questions ahead of time.  This gives you a heads-up as to what attendees will be expecting you to address during the teleseminar.

Your advertising should include any credentials the presenter has, as well as a headshot photo of him/her.

Choose a conference call provider carefully - there are tons of options listed on the Internet, or get referrals from business associates if you can.   It's best if your conference call provider allows you to mute callers during the seminar to avert background noise (you'd be amazed at how much extraneous noise comes through otherwise, from cell phones ringing and ambulance sirens to babies crying and dogs barking).  Eventually, you may also want the ability to record the call, so that it can be run over and over again, or downloaded from your Web site as an MP3 file, or even sold from your Web site.

Put together an hour-long, informational, conversational dialog.  To make it sound less like a sales pitch, have someone interview you.  You want to have a relaxed chat with the interviewer, giving out good, useful information that will make a positive impression on your captive audience.  At the end of the call, leave room for questions and answers. Be sure you know how to un-mute the line so that callers can talk to you!

Practice, practice, practice - but don't expect it to be perfect.  There are bound to be glitches the first few times, but you can minimize them by trying out your conference call provider ahead of time with friends and associates, and by limiting the size and scope of your first couple of conference calls.

The most important part of the call, though, is the offer at the end.  Example:  "The first five people who order XYZ product using offer code ABC will receive $250 off our normal price, so don't wait - call today."  Create a sense of urgency, and make the deal worth pursuing - it must sound like a real bargain.

Once you get the hang of using teleseminars to your advantage, you may be able to sell them - that's right, actually make money on the teleseminars themselves.  People love teleseminars.  They can listen leisurely, at home in their pajamas with pets on their laps.  They can listen on cell phones on their way to meetings, in their offices while answering e-mail or eating lunch, or just about anywhere.  They don't have to drive anywhere special, and nobody will be able to tell if they doze off (we hope your conference call will warrant staying awake, however).

You don't have to be marketing a B2B product or service in order to benefit from teleseminars.  Also, you don't need to replace your current in-person marketing seminars with teleseminars - you actually target a whole new market with teleseminars.  Some people won't attend live seminars.  Perhaps they want to avoid a perceived sales pitch or fear a "hard sell."  Maybe they just don't have time to travel to your place of business.  If you're branching out from local to regional, or regional to national, your clientele will definitely appreciate talking to someone in person but wouldn't go to the trouble of driving several hours to see you in the flesh.

Here are some examples of potential teleseminar titles for various types of businesses.  Please note that you need to offer an attention-grabbing title, and a subject with broad interest.  A medical office doing a seminar on how to tell if you have toenail fungus probably won't garner as much interest as a seminar about ED or how to look younger.  You can discuss the health issues related to ED or a youthful appearance during the call, but to attract interest, you'll need to grab the eyeballs.
