Use the RTF Format for Word Documents

Most businesses and individuals use the ubiquitous DOC format for their Word documents, despite the frequency of security issues and danger of macro viruses.  Sometimes, security holes or viruses are exploited before the major virus protection software vendors have a chance to update their products.  One way of avoiding almost all of these problems is to ignore DOC and save your Word documents in RTF (Rich Text Format) instead.  Others can still read your documents, but RTF does take up more space than DOC.  Since documents generally aren't that large to begin with, and hard drive space has become relatively cheap, size shouldn't be much of an issue.

You might also consider chucking MS Office altogether in favor of the free OpenOffice.org suite.  Choose the Open Document Format for saving your documents; it takes up miniscule amounts of space.  You can still save in DOC or RTF if others without the software need to read your work, but you won't be vulnerable to any Word exploits if you're using OpenOffice instead.
