Host a Dog & Cat First Aid
Class for Maximum Exposure

Host a free cat and dog first aid class and watch your pet business explode.  If your business is a veterinary practice, you've already got the skills necessary to present the seminar yourself.  If not, approach local vets to see if they'd be willing to do the presentation in exchange for your doing the marketing and promotion.

Many churches have meeting rooms that they'll allow you to use for free or a donation provided you don't charge for the seminar.  If you're a member of the local Chamber or any other group with a physical location, the organization might also have conference rooms for rent.  Some corporations even let people use their conference rooms after hours by non-competing companies, just for the exposure they'll get from your marketing.

Plan a one or two-hour first-aid seminar, and arrange to have a very friendly cat and dog "patient," if possible.  Offer free door prizes and refreshments - cookies from the local warehouse club or grocery store, decaffeinated coffee, iced tea and bottled water will do the trick.  Hold your event at 7 p.m. on a Tuesday or Thursday evening, or a Sunday afternoon at around 2:00.

To promote your seminar, send an e-mail or snail mail letter to all of your customers about three weeks ahead of time.  Invite them to come and bring a friend.  Ask non-competing pet businesses to post your flyers in their establishments.

Most importantly, call and e-mail every animal shelter and rescue group within a 60-mile radius of your business, and ask them if they would please get the word out to their volunteers about your free pet first aid class.  They might also be willing to send out your information to people who have adopted pets from them, and to distribute your flyers to new pet guardians.

Be sure to ask for RSVP's to make sure you have enough space and refreshments.  Put "space limited - please RSVP" on your invitations and promotional flyers and posters.  You may end up with a waiting list for your next seminar!
